In many places around here, opening day of dove season temperatures register 90+ degrees – which can make a long day for you and for your retriever.

Just like any other athlete, your buddy needs to be conditioned to hold up to the heat and the exercise of retrieving. If he isn’t already getting plenty of running time each day (hopefully making some retrieves for you), it’s time to get him outside, getting used to retrieving again and the heat-filled days ahead – build on the time and tolerance gradually.

And, if your buddy has put on a few extra pounds during the “non-working” months, now’s the time to get him back slim and trim. It helps your dog tremendously not to be overweight when he’s bringing in those birds for you.

Hunting season is just weeks away so start conditioning your dog today if he’s not in true retrieving shape!

Need a good, trained hunting companion? We have a few started dogs available. Sorry – no pups until our fall litters are bred!
